2021:
DW is... an on-and-off thing in my life, I've found, and I've stopped apologising to the void about it. The point of a blog is to -- well, log. As in weblog, you know, the origin of the word.

I'm still AlchemistDoctor here. I'm the same on Tumblr, and I've got a personal blog at distinctivestatic.me and a microblog at distinctive.coffee. I haven't been on Pillowfort in ages, but I'm AlchemistDoctor there. I'm still Aelfay on Ao3. I have an Etsy where I sell patterns and stuff I make here. I'm on Hubzilla here.

Fandoms are pretty much the same as last year, TBH. 2020, if anything, made me dive deeper into fanfic/fandom as a coping mechanism.

Since last year I:
--made actual wearable clothing.
--finished a quilt
--moved
--contributed to a book (twice)
--lost some friends
--made some friends
--started to learn video editing
--fixed a 1918 sewing machine

So 2020 wasn't a total wash.

2020:
Wow, been a while. Hello DW.

I'm AlchemistDoctor here and on Twitter. Don't bother with my Tumblr, I check Tumblr... eh, once a year or so. I haven't been on Pillowfort in ages. I'm still Aelfay on Ao3.

Major fandoms: Avengers, mostly Clint Barton (not the MCU), Sherlock Holmes, and Venom.

Side fandoms/old fandoms include Supernatural, Doctor Who, Shakespeare, and Cabin Pressure. I tend to enjoy fandoms based on what the people I follow randomly get interested in. I'm fandom-adjacent to lots of things.

My primary fandom contributions are fanfics, all on Ao3, unless you count my Sherlock Socks.

Personally, I'm a chemist, writer, and fiber artist. I like to bake and make things.

Since last year I:
--got back into Marvel, mostly Clint Barton and Bucky Barnes (hello Winterhawk)
--re-taught myself to sew
--graduated and became a Real Live Scientist.

Not bad.


2019:
Everyone's writing these, I suppose it's time to do the same.

Personally, I'm a chemist, writer, fiber artist, and pre-med student. I'm not great at DW yet: never was an LJ fan, so I'm still confused about how to make this work. Please have patience with my confusion about how interacting works here.

There's a fic on LJ called "Aliens and Army Doctors"* on LiveJournal, and it's... truly incredible, and has a similar premise as Venom. Sherlock's the alien, though he's not a symbiote. It's one of my favourites.

I dunno. Watson would be a pretty decent symbiote. "We're eating today. I don't care if you think you eat enough, you don't eat enough for US, so we're eating."

Someone once said the aesthetic is Bisexual Sweaterboy and Walking Disaster. In Eddie's case it's more of a Bisexual Hoodieboy... but there's no denying Venom is a Walking Disaster...

Well, welcome! i migrated from LJ to DW, never was a Tumblr fan, so the implosion doesn't bother me much. It's a bit of a learning experience, but one I much prefer to Tumblr. I hope you like it here.

This is hardly my first fandom migration but I think it's the most jarring. I was on FF.net back in the... elderly days of online fandom, when FF.net was the first multi-fandom place, because otherwise you were on *gasp* individual forums for each interest.
Then tumblr, because FF.net started cracking down, and now here.

I think mostly I miss tumblr's simple upload/post interface, because I'm still confused about how to do that here, but the communication lines are so much clearer!

Funny that you mention Venom. I ran across a few Venom fics for the first time the other day (and I already have such a soft spot for MCU fics) and instantly fell in love with all that weirdness. Definitely checking out your fics!

Hi there! It's great to meet you. Thanks for adding me. If it's any consolation, I've struggled with DW for a long time; I was trying to figure out how to expand my circle and failing. Then the Tumblr thing happened and now suddenly, I'm meeting all these new people! Also really appreciate a fellow Cabin Pressure fan.

The Sherlock fandom meme has been great, and so is the_great_tumblr_purge. I've been able to expand my circle a lot!

I've not been posting much fiber arts commentary lately, but which things do you do?

I'm primarily a knitter but I've done most everything: knit, crochet, tat, quilt, spin, sew... and if I haven't done it yet I'm trying to figure out how to do it. Lego Man says he doesn't want to ever own sheep, partially because they're dumb and partially because his entire house would be made of wool.

They're dumb because they're bred that way. It makes rams less volatile/like goats.

I've done a little hand quilting and I've needle tatted; I got led through shuttle tatting but like using a slide rule I don't remember how. I've woven, and knitted a sweater and a pair of socks. I always have to look up crochet...

That's what I told him! He didn't buy it. I may be able to convince him into one of those Scottish cows with the nice long coats.

I'm the opposite with tatting; I couldn't find anywhere IRL that sold tatting needles, and so just bought the shuttles at a nearby store.

I weave, but it's always on makeshift looms. Real ones cost a lot and I move too much to make it worth it, much to my chagrin. It leads to weird workarounds like this:


I have to look up crochet a lot too. All the stitches are really similar and I get lost.

I like the metal tined picks from the beauty supply when I don't have a (noun not loading)

I've done a small thing sorta like this, but I took apart a Pier 1 bamboo tray. Next time I do it, I'm setting up a stick for the warp.

Ooh that's a thought. I've considered using a wooden frame with the glass taken out.

Picture frames aren't really strong enough. Stretcher bar frame, that'd work. Since now I've got some of the metal loop looms, I could try using them.

I think that's what I meant but didn't have the words for. XD I've seen some creative weaving using embroidery hoops as well, but it looked like a lot of work to set up.

Hoops would be hard. Could see it to start a macrame project.

It looks really cool, but exhausting to set up. Trying to get the right tension and have all the threads even? My personal nightmare.

I'm very bad with hoops in general so I'd just fail aimlessly. I like things where I tie the string to something that is not going to let it go; tension is not my strong point.
