Huh. That sounds like the old days of Geocities... there's definitely a bigger sense of adventure and discovery with finding separate sites and niche interests. It's kind of nice that people are still doing that.
(Not me because I'm terribly lazy and my coding skills were always sub-par. But I like the idea of it.)
